GREAT SHOW BUT BUT ISSUES WITH SOUND MIXING AND LIGHTING

Hairspray was a fantastic show -- every song is a jam. Great performers, great music, great set, awesome show. But boy, the tech seemed a bit off during the performance I saw. The sound mixing made it really hard to hear the vocalists over the orchestra -- I really couldn't understand any words in some of the songs. The spotlighting was also struggling to light up the right performer in some of the songs (there are some particularly difficult songs to spotlight where the light has to bounce back and forth between several performers, but for a Broadway-level production I expected better spotlight handling). I still absolutely recommend the show!

HAIRSPRAY - AMAZING

Thoroughly enjoyed the show! The cast had high energy all the way through, vocals were great, but what really caught my eye was the costuming. Brilliant!

FANTASTIC BUT SOUND ISSUES

Loved the production, the cast was amazing. We had decent seats 1/3 back row O Sounds was muffled and hard to hear the words. Not just me…others commented Keller needs to work on this.

FANTASTIC…EXCEPT FOR THE SEATS

This experience was fantastic. Cast was amazing. First time at Orpheum. Won’t be back. I’m 6’2” and the seating was cramped and uncomfortable. Add in that the dicks behind me kept kicking my seat and it took away a star for me. But the show itself was great.

ORCHESTRA VS VOCALISTS

Wow. This could’ve been a WWE event. The orchestra fought HARD to overpower the vocals. Couldn’t hear a word the singers sang over the loud instrumentals. “Motormouth” stole the show: Amazing voice (orchestra even respected her and knew who was in charge).

CARTOONISH AND DIFFICULT TO HEAR

I found the show bright and energetic but quite cartoonish, especially Edna, in its characterizations. The story smacked of white saviorism and didn't work for me. There were issues with the sound and the band overpowering the vocalists to the point I couldn't understand any of the words. The shrillness of the female voices also made the lyrics difficult to understand. I did appreciate that the merchandise was not mostly or entirely black, like most shows.

GOOD MUSIC / CRASS WRITING

There are a lot of talented singers and dancers in the Hairspray production at the Orpheum. But too many cringeworthy moments with dumbed down crude jokes and gratuitous sexual inference. The original score and writing stand on their own; why not just leave it at that?
